The colonial archive is, emphatically, a series of omissions and erasures. Through their work with its images, documents and artifacts, Tia-Simone Gardner and Rini Yun Keagy gather the minor fragments of past and present towards a major gesture that troubles the space between fact and truth. Through moving-image, photographs, and drawing, the artists refigure colonial palimpsests to conjure the phantoms of burned codices, stolen relics and lost bodies. Their work posits a break with old archaeologies of Black and indigenous cultures and opens new methods to read place-time relationships.
About the Artists
Tia-Simone Gardner is and visual artist, educator, and Black feminist scholar. Her creative and scholarly practice are interested interdisciplinary strategies and engage ideas of ritual, iconoclasm, and geography. Gardner received her BA in Art and Art History from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and her MFA in Interdisciplinary Practices and Time-Based Media from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2018 she received her Ph.d. in Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota. She is currently working on a project on Blackness and the Mississippi River as well as a photographic/writing project with her mother that addresses questions of biopolitics, Black memory and Indigineity by looking at the houses that the women in her family lived in the post-bellum South. Gardner lives in Minneapolis.
Rini Yun Keagy is a moving image artist whose practice in video and 16mm film is multimodal and research based. Her work investigates race, labor, disease and disability, and sites of historical and psychosocial trauma. Rini earned her MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University and has taught filmmaking at University of California Santa Cruz, University of the Arts, Minneapolis College of Art & Design, and Carleton College.
